Satellites

Each satellite measures 120 x 10 x 10 cm and carries both fluxgate and atomic magnetometers. Our first satellite (Io-1) will launch in 2025, delivering data to support the World Magnetic Model (WMM).

Partners

Six partner organisations provide critical mission hardware and services. Financial and technical support is provided by the UK Space Agency through the International Bilateral Fund, the European Space Agency through the ESA BIC, and the US National Geospatial Intelligence Agency through the Magquest program.

Design (2019-2020)

Early development is supported through the ESA BIC and Magquest Phases 2 & 3.

Test (2021 - 2022)

Prototype instruments undergo testing at NASA Goddard as part of Magquest Phase 4.

Build (2023-2024)

Production of the flight model begins, and the project receives UKSA funding.

Launch (2025)

Io-1 launches to low Earth orbit, where it will remain for three years collecting magnetic data.

Validate (2025 - 2026)

Data from Io-1 is processed and validated against data from ESA's Swarm satellites.

Repeat (2026 -)

Follow on missions (Io-2, Io-3) ensure an uninterrupted, long-term dataset.

Data

Magnetic data will be available following mission launch in Q4 2025.
